If you don’t quite get the obsession with the Georgia Bulldogs, may I remind you that David Andrews and Isaiah Wynn both played in the trenches there. Additionally, Sony Michel has experience running through his gaps.
Trent Brown got paid big time from the Raiders and Patriot fans are losing their minds about how will we ever replace him. LaAdrian Waddle signs with the Bills and even more anxiety ensues.
First off, Trent Brown and the rest of the offensive line had an incredible playoff run. However, prior to the calendar turning to 2019, the highest paid offensive lineman wasn’t that impressive. While Brady didn’t get sacked or knocked down a whole lot, he was practicing some self-preservation tactics and taking himself out of plays from September through November. In reality, the common talking points regarding Trent Brown in the regular season were always either about his incredible size or his penchant for penalties.
Like most people who have a clue about budgets and the quality of players we had on IR this season, I knew there was no way we were paying Trent Brown. Sure, he figured stuff out and looks like he could continue to play well for the Patriots, but we can get those same results for a lot less cash.
Besides having last year’s 1st round pick Isaiah Wynn ready to join the active roster and likely protect Brady’s blindside, we also have another big man who has his fair share of NFL experience. Brian Schwenke is a low key returning offensive lineman for the Patriots. After playing most of his career in Tennessee, Schwenke was a late addition to last year’s squad. As had been Schwenke’s MO, injuries once again plagued the former 4th round pick and rookie starter. If Schwenke can manage to stay healthy, he may be the perfect plug and play lineman in 2019.
Having a peek at this year’s draft class, there’s a pretty obvious early round target for Belichick. If the name Lamont Rockarius Gaillard doesn’t just make you think offensive lineman, maybe the fact that he is a Georgia Bulldog will draw you in. Recruited as a defensive lineman out of high school, Lamont switched to offense in the spring of 2015. The 6’3” 305 lb. center was a 3 year starter. He played in a total of 44 games at Georgia and had 42 starts. Prior to switching over to center, Rock Mountain (my nickname for him...patent pending), played right guard for a season.
