BAD END OF THE YEAR FOR BOSTON SPORTS

12/31/2013

The day started off with a Boston College loss by the score of 42-19 against Arizona in the AdvoCare v100 Bowl. They gave up 529 yards and had 2 turnovers, one being a pick six before the score got out of hand.

Then the Celtics let a game get away from them after having a double digit lead thanks to the play of the bench. Kelly Olynyk had a career best 21 points in the loss. For a while it looked like the Cs were going to prevent Kyle Korver from keeping his 3 point streak alive, but he hit one with 6:10 left in the game to extend it one more game.

Then the Bruins dropped the ball (puck?)when they let a 3-1 lead slip away by giving the Islanders 3 power play goals.

On a side note I got carded buying beer. Hopefully the local teams will kick off 2014 with some winning streaks. Preferably a 3 game streak by the playoff bound Patriots.

WORST OF 2013
  • Bruins giving up 2 goals in final 1:16 of game 6 to lose the Stanley Cup
  • Seeing Paul Pierce go to Brooklyn and not stay a Celtic for his entire NBA career
  • The first 16 innings of the ALCS where the offense was non-existent
  • The Spurs neglecting to close out game 6 against the Heat
  • The injury bug wreaking havoc on the Patriots' defense
BEST OF 2013
  • LeGarrette Blounts' record setting game on Sunday
  • Tedy Bruschi getting inducted into the Patriots' Hall of Fame.
  • Bruins' coming back in game 7 against the Maple Leafs (2 goals in final 1:22 to send it to OT)
  • October 13th in general.  Patriots and Red Sox both have comeback victories for the ages
  • Big Papi's grand slam to tie up game 2 of the ALCS

WHAT'S IN A NAME WHEN IT COMES TO SPORTS?

So, the other day on WEEI they were talking about what would happen if Julian Edelman married Claude Julien: would he be called Julian Julien?  This made me think that clearly I'm not the only person who randomly thinks about Boston athlete names.  My friend Jenn, aka Reillywoman, said it might be a Boston thing, so here are my random, and I mean random, thoughts about player names from the past and present of New England sports.

Currently both the Bruins and Patriots have players who have very similar last names.  Of these players two are done for the year and one is dealing with concussion issues.  Hopefully, the remaining players can avoid the injury bug because one is our leading point scorer for the Patriots.  On the Bruins we have Carl Soderberg (concussion) and Dennis Seidenberg (torn ACL and MCL) who have similar sounding names.  Matt Bartkowksi, defenseman for the Bruins, has a name similar to Patriots' standouts Rob Gronkowski (torn ACL and MCL) and Stephen Gostkowski.

Some other fun names from both the past and present:

Ronnie Lippett and Andre Tippett from the Patriots' first Superbowl Run
Pete Peeters, former Bruins' goalie
Esposito, Rico Petrocelli, Nomar Garciaparra, Rajon Rondo, Coco Crisp, Varitek, Saltalamacchia, Tuukka Rask, Mirabelli, Tully Banta-Cain, Tedy Bruschi, Youk and Yaz.

I'm sure I've omitted a few obvious ones, so make a comment about any that I've missed.

BLOUNT WAS SMOKIN!!!!  PATRIOTS SECURE THE 2 SEED

LeGarrette Blount was on fire today.  334 yards from scrimmage......W-O-W!!!  According to pro-football-reference.com
that places him 12th on the NFL all-time list for all-purpose yards.  In case you are interested in the current leader that would be Glyn Milburn who accumulated  404 yards on December 10, 1995.  Blount did break the Patriots previous record of 273 by Larry Garron.  Ironically, that record also came against the Buffalo Bills.

So how did he set the record?  He had his number called 24 times to run the ball in the deluge and managed 189 yards and 2 touchdowns.  The remaining yards came from 2 huge kickoff returns which both took the wind out of the Bills' sails as they tried to win in Foxboro for the first time since 2000 when Doug Flutie orchestrated a 16-13 overtime win.

Although Blount ended up being the man of the hour, he came close to being the goat as he almost had two turnovers.  But as they say, almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades and the Patriots play football.  Blount definitely had some great karma going for him as he gave away 5 tickets to today's game using his twitter account.  How cool is that?

So who else stood out today?  Julian Edelman made some big catches and ended up with 65 yards on 9 receptions.  For the regular season he has 105 catches for a total of 1,056 yards.  As awesome as those statistics are, his most amazing statistic is probably his 6 fumbles.  Oh you didn't know he had 6 fumbles?  That's probably because none of the fumbles have resulted in turnovers.  In his career he has 12 fumbles and only 2 turnovers.  I'd imagine that has to be some sort of record.  At the very least, it is a pretty impressive factoid for you to share with your friends.

The defense also gets a thumbs up from me today.  Although they let the Bills get back into the game in the second half, they held the Bills to 4/13 on third down conversions and 0/3 on fourth down.  They also managed 4 sacks and showed some quality tackling technique throughout most of the game.

With the win, the Patriots secured the 2 seed which means we get to pass go proceed to round 2 of the playoffs.  Most importantly the 2 seed gives the team an extra week to get healthy and
and prepare.

B'S LOST, C'S WON AND LSU BEAT ALABAMA 9-6

12/28/2013

The Bruins traveled up to Ottawa to take on the Senators in a rematch of last night's contest.  Unfortunately we would lose 4-3 and end up splitting the back to back mini-series.  I totally saw that one goal loss coming after the 5-0 victory from yesterday.  The goals all seem to even out in the end, so although a 5-0 win is great when it is happening, you gotta hope you lose a game by a big margin to even things out instead of multiple one goal losses.

The Celtics would escape their matinee at the Garden with a victory after letting the Cavaliers come back from a 22 point deficit.  Brandon Bass would seal the deal by blocking Dion Waiters' shot.  Right now the team is 13-17 and getting closer to having Rajon Rondo back into the lineup.

LSU didn't really beat Alabama today, but they were showing that game on tv today.  Although I like football, I really can't say that I get that into college football, probably because we have professional teams which
hold our interest year round.  Anyway, the game was on tv in the distance and my friend and I were discussing the game and how low the score was before it dawned on us that it wasn't a live game.
