As far as I can tell, the last big-time free agent to come to the Red Sox and deliver was a 29 year-old outfielder from Cleveland, Manny Ramirez. Since Ramirez was signed by Boston in 2000 and it is now 2017, it's been a pretty long drought.
In case you haven't heard, thatDavid Price signing doesn't seem to be working out that well for the Red Sox. That Pablo Sandoval contract whichI never wanted to see happen in the first place, might be the worst free agent signing MLB has ever seen.
With that being said, I was going to write a post about how Curt Schilling was the last big-time free agent signing to deliver for the Red Sox. Remember that Ford commercial where he said he was heading to Boston to break a 100 year-old curse? That was classic. Fast forward 10 months and the curse was in fact broken. Of course after always having in my head that Schilling came to Boston as a free agent, I now realize that he actually signed an extension with the Diamondbacks and was actually traded to the Red Sox. While he was part of the negotiations, he wasn't actually a free agent.
HMMMMMMMMM, so if it wasn't Schilling during the winter of 2003, who was it?

As I've written many times in the past, I'd much rather see the Sox pay the guys who come up through the system and play well for Boston that chase after someone who hasn't done anything for our team. I know people in sports are generally against paying someone for what they did in the past, but I'm much more comfortable giving a little extra for someone who has delivered for us in the past than not at all.
