MY TAKE ON THE PATRIOTS PRESEASON LOSS TO THE REDSKINS

8/7/2014

Obviously losing 23-6 is never a good thing, even in the preseason.  Although the results weren't good and there were definitely lots of things for the team to improve on next week, there were still some positives.
The most obvious positive of the night was the play of rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.  While his numbers of 9/13 for 157 yards and 1 touchdown looks nice on paper, his play on the field was easily as impressive.  Assuming he can repeat his performance next Friday, I'd be very comfortable seeing Mallett get moved.  Of course in order for Mallett to get traded, he probably needs to show a little consistency, as he was completely all over the place tonight.  Supposedly he looked really good at practice this week.  Of course looking good in practice and looking good in a game are two completely different things.  The one thing I've always thought of when it come to Mallett in preseasons' of the past is that he takes a while to get going.
Wide receiver Brian Tyms looked pretty impressive tonight.  We'll have to wait and see if he is just a preseason stud (see Zach Sudfeld) or a castoff who thrives for the Patriots (see Wes Welker).

While keeping in mind that many of tonight's players will not be seeing much time on the field during the regular season, there were still many concerns.  The top two concerns after watching tonight's game are penalties and missed tackles.  These are both likely to be points on emphasis during next week's practices and should get the bugs worked out with more game like situations.  As was pointed out during tonight's telecast, with the recent changes to preseason practices the missed tackles are unfortunately par for the course at this point in the season.  Hopefully, these two deficiencies do not carry over to next week.

To finish off this post I'm going to describe some players just using one word.

Kanorris Davis- determined

Roy Finch- Ridley-like

Malcolm Butler- close
