MALLETT GETTING THE START FOR PATRIOTS TONIGHT: WILL THIS BE HIS SWAN SONG FOR HOUSTON?

Yes, I admit I've been a total slacker with my blog over the past week.  Oh well, life and things like ebola and the Market Basket boycott get in the way.  No, I don't have ebola, but I did read an awful lot about it over the weekend.  My advice to avoid it and other things like the flu is to simply keep your immune system firing on all cylinders.  Also, don't be afraid of running a temperature, it's how your body naturally fights off viruses.  Okay, back to football I know.
Tonight the Patriots will play their first of four preseason games when they take on the Washington Redskins at 7:30.  If you happen to be reading this in Hawaii, you'll be glad to know that you can see the game on Channel 5, of course you'll need to tune in a 1:30.  Just in case you didn't get the memo, Tom Brady is not expected to play in this game and neither is Rob Gronkowski.  According to everyone who was at this week's joint practices, Brady was the man as usual and looked great throwing to "pygmies" Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola as well as guys like Brandon LaFell.

Starting for the Patriots will be Ryan Mallett who is in the last year of his contract.  Obviously there are lots of reasons why Mallet will be seeing an abundance of playing time tonight.  Although it is just preseason, it is still good game experience for both the Patriots and potential suitors.  Having him start the game also gives Belichick the opportunity to put in rookie Jimmy Garoppolo for more reps than he would see if Brady were to start.  I'm of the camp that believes that unless Garoppolo looks completely outmatched tonight that Mallett is likely playing his 2014 ball elsewhere.  As with most fans, I'd like to see him get picked up by the Houston Texans.  While I don't think we need Andre Johnson in return, he appears to be the fan favorite.  Personally, I'd be interested in getting TE Ryan Griffin.
Why do I like the idea of Griffin?  First off the Patriots are currently stock-piled pretty heavily at wide-receiver with players who fit into the offense.  Andre Johnson is known to be a deep threat wide receiver, which contrary to popular belief, the Patriots don't need.  Assuming they stay healthy and can be on the same page as Brady, the Patriots have enough deep threat potential in Aaron Dobson, Kenbrell Thompkins, Brandon LaFell and Rob Gronkowki.  If you recall last season, the Patriots really didn't have trouble getting someone open deep, they just had trouble connecting.  If Johnson wants to play with someone who can connect on a deep pass, it's Ryan Mallett.

The second reason I like the idea of Griffin is that we can definitely use some help at tight end.  Griffin had a pretty good rookie season with the Texans last season.  His most impressive game came late in the season against Denver where he caught five passes for 66 yards.  Seeing as how Griffin played his high school ball in New Hampshire for Londonderry and college ball for UCONN, I'm going to go out on a limb and say he probably has a lot of room for growth.  What better place is there for a kid from New Hampshire to see his true potential than to play for Belichick?
