LASTING THOUGHTS: PATRIOTS VS. COLTS

Sunday night games do not lead to timely posts during my busy season.  While the game was not what I hoped it would be, it was a win for the good guys and it will be remembered for many years to come.  Move over butt fumble and calling a goal line passing play in the Superbowl, there's a new bone-headed play in the top position
FAKE PUNT- While the play in itself isn't a bad idea, Chuck Pagano really screwed the pooch with it.  While I could write a pretty long list of why the call was stupid, I'll just go with three reasons today.  First off, using the play against Bill Belichick is just plain stupid.  Second of all, the Colts were still in the game with lots of time to spare.  Third, we now know that the guy playing center at that time in the game is not the player who practiced the trick play in practice.
BLOCKED PAT- Jamie Collins has some serious ups.  It was great to see his athleticism used to jump over both lines to to keep the lead at 7.

JONESING SOME SACKS- Chandler Jones delivered 2.5 sacks on Sunday.  He now has 5.5 on the season.  While the number of sacks is impressive, I think the lack of penalties called against him lately is even more impressive.  According to Pro Football Reference, Jones hasn't had a penalty called against him since January.  His last roughing the passer penalty came over a year ago when he was flagged for two of them in the opener against Miami.

TOO MANY SHORT POSSESSIONS- Ryan Allen was on pace for a ridiculously low number of punts this season.  After being able to take the field only for holding duties during the first half, Ryan was summoned onto the field to kick the ball away 5 times in the second half.  Four of his five punts resulted from the Patriots not getting a first down, in other words a quick three an out.  While three and outs suck in general, they really suck when you have them on back to back to back possessions.  Earlier this season I wrote about how efficient the team was being on third down.  Hopefully they get back to that this week against the Jets.
