After signing a one year deal this offseason, Ryan Allen saw the Patriots trade up to pick another punter in this year’s draft. Known for having a big leg and the ability to take on all kicking duties, Jake Bailey has been skying some balls in camp. With a few weeks left until roster cutdowns, here are some things to take note of as summer slips away.

Ryan Allen-
  • The lefty is consistent with his punts and surehanded with his holding duties.
  • If he were to get cut his dead money is only $100,000.
  • Only 8% of his punts have been touchbacks.
  • 37% of his regular season punts have finished inside the 20
  • 43% of his postseason punts have been inside the 20 (54% last year)
  • Has had 2 punts blocked.
  • Had 3 punts inside the 10 in last year’s Super Bowl.

Camp Observations and Patriots Past-
  • While Bailey gets more hangtime than Allen, his punts are very catchable as they come down like a spiral.
  • Allen’s are more of an end over end style which are hard to handle.
  • Many of Bailey’s punts take off for the endzone on the first bounce making downing it in play difficult.
  • Allen’s punts are more predictable with their soft bounces near the goal line.
  • Bailey has done some holding for Gostkowski
  • Jake has shown off his big kickoff leg in practice as well.
  • According to this article by Mac Cerullo, Bailey gets a lot of his air time by having a deep understanding of aviation
  • Former Patriot punter Zoltan Mesko is quoted in this article as saying that left-footed punters have an advantage when playing in Gillette Stadium
  • Last season rookie Corey Bojorquez didn’t get a chance to punt during the pre-season because he “didn’t earn it”.
