Before the Patriots and Gostkowski came to terms with a new contract, I looked at some potential kickers the Patriots could consider. Instead, a year after having 3 punters in camp the Pats moved up the draft board to pick a punter with the 163rd pick.
So what do we know about this pick? First off, his name is Jake Bailey and he played for Stanford. Second, he punts with his right foot. Yes, Belichick moved up to pick a right-footed punter. Third, Jake must be doing something right, besides punting, because he has a blue check mark on Twitter. Since he doesn’t have many more followers than me, that’s pretty impressive.
While those three facts are pretty cool, the fact that besides punting, he has also been a kickoff specialist is intriguing. Throw in his high school career where he kicked 3 50+ yard field goals and you can see where I’m going. Although he didn’t play lacrosse, the well-rounded athlete played both soccer and track.
While it’s anyone’s guess as to if Belichick is bringing him in for competition purposes or trade bait, we’ll have to see what transpires down the road.
