5 RED SOX THOUGHTS ON THIS 25TH DAY OF AUGUST

8/25/2015

Having your own sports blog is fun.  Some of the positive things are not having to play to anyone else's agenda or timeline.  Of course with it being just a hobby, I do frequently lack the time, energy, and resources needed to get a post written.  Currently, I have 41 posts which I've started but never
finished for one reason or another.  Additionally, I have lots of notes which I've written down, but never even started to type about.  Why?  Sometimes I realize that the idea I've had is just completely wrong and the data doesn't support it.  Other times someone else types the same exact thing I was thinking and I like for my posts to be original.  Many times it just comes down to running out of time and the post no longer being relevant.  Regardless, having my own blog is fun and if it can some day turn into a way to make money so I can live on a boat out on the ocean, that would be great. In the meantime, here are my four thoughts about the Red Sox.

1.  Don Orsillo leaving NESN at the end of this season makes me sad.  Personally, I love listening to Orsillo and Remy. While some people like to complain that they talk about dumb stuff, personally I love it.  It's baseball, it's slow, it's pretty easy to understand.  The last thing I need is someone telling me that with another ball, the batter will be awarded first base.

2.  With today being the 25th of August, I'm going to remind everyone of what happened on the 25th of November.  That was the day that the Red Sox signed both Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval. Yeah, that's probably a day they wish they could have back.  I remember thinking that the signing of Hanley meant that he would shift to 3rd as a member of the Red Sox and the talk of getting Pablo would be over. Unfortunately, my thoughts were not correct and we all know what actually happened.  Maybe this would be a good time to let Dave Dombrowski know that I'm available as a consultant.  In case he thinks this is all hindsight, he can read my post about Pablo from November 15th.  Moreover, I was in support of Jackie Bradley Jr. long before the rest of the yahoos.
3.  This thought goes along with the posts which I started, but might not have finished.  Or, maybe I did write it but can't find it.  Regardless, last year the Red Sox bats struggled.  We had some talented young guys (Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr.) who were scuffling at the plate for most of the season.  So, what did the Red Sox do?  Bring back Stephen Drew , yup that'll help.  Nothing like being a young impressionable player who loses their job to a veteran who can't hit.  That surely won't mess with your mind.  Of course the fact that the team was without their hitting coach for a good chunk of the season probably didn't help with the hitting issues either.

4.  Remember back in 2010 and 2011 when we wished we had another wild card spot so we would get to play some October ball?  Well, now that we have it, we don't seem to be utilizing it with our last place finishes.

5.  Baseball is a mental game.  While we talk about that all the time when guys are having trouble hitting, we sometimes forget about that when a pitcher is sucking.  The latest Boston pitcher to get a lot of grief is Junichi Tazawa.  During last night's game I spent some time going through Taz' splits. Here are his numbers for this season based on which inning he is pitching.

Inning        ERA        HR     BB     SO
7th             8.38          1         5        8
8th             1.87           2        1       33
9th              6.23         1         3        7

If you need more convincing that Taz is destined for the 8th inning, last year he had an ERA of 1.67 in the 8th.  For the 7th and 9th it was 4.91 and 3.12, respectively.
