As has been the case since December 27th when Dennis Seidenberg tore his ACL and MCL, the Bruins are in the market for a defenseman. With tomorrow being the trade deadline, the Bruins have about 24 hours to get any deals done. Ironically, Seidenberg made his way onto the Bruins as part of a trade deadline deal in 2010. That deadline deal involved the Panthers as they traded Seidenberg and Matt Barkowski to the Bruins in return for Byron Bitz, Craig Weller and the Tampa Bay Lightning's second round pick.
Looking at the Panthers' roster and contract situation, they are quite heavy on the number of defensemen who are due to become free agents at the end of the season. Assuming the Bruins are looking to get a quick rental to finish out the season, the Panthers may be the team who we will need to make a deal with. Players to watch tonight on the Panthers are:
#77 Tom Gilbert- 6'2" 206 pounds - 31years old - unrestricted- cap hit $900,000- 27 points
#44 Erik Gudbranson- 6'5" 216 pounds - 22 years old - restricted - cap hit $3.2 million- 7 points
#7 Dmitry Kulikov- 6'1" 204 pounds - 23 years old - restricted - cap hit $2.5 million - 12 points
#4 Dylan Olsen- 6'2" 222 pounds- 23 years old - restricted - cap hit $870,000 - 11 points (in just 23 games)
Looking at the quality of the players and their paychecks, I'd imagine any deal would have to involve taking some payroll off of the Panthers' books. Although Olsen looks to be the least experienced of the four, he currently has the best +/- with 0. Olsen was part of the Blackhawks' organization until November.
