The other day I was listening to the radio when the topic of Jon Lester's contract came up. While I've said many times that I don't think Lester is an ace, I've got to hand it him with his numbers this year. Without a doubt, he is putting up the kind of numbers which will likely get him a much bigger contract than I was picturing this winter.
WHEN IT COMES TO HIS NEXT CONTRACT, JON LESTER NEEDS TO BE EVALUATED AS A PITCHER AND NOT A LEFTY7/25/2014 While I've looked at a couple things which may make his numbers seem inflated (or does deflated make more sense?), I'm not going to go there right now. Instead, I'm going to point out that Lester isn't the typical left-handed pitcher who lefties fear. As a matter of fact, if managers were paying attention, maybe they would be keeping their lefties in the lineup against Lester. A quick look at Lester's splits this season shows that lefties are hitting him pretty well this season. When you look at his teammates' splits you can quickly imagine how his ERA may look a bit different if he was facing more lefties like they are. For those who don't know, Doubront is also a southpaw. Again while Lester is pitching great in a contract year, I think people need to hit the brakes a bit when they try to say that he is worth more because he's a lefty. I'm sorry, but the numbers don't justify it. For comparison sake, I've included the splits of the other pitchers who are currently ranked in the top 5 for ERA when it comes to lefties.
