For the past three seasons, the most consistent receiver on the Patriots has been Jakobi Meyers. With Meyers set to be a free agent, there are a variety of numbers being floated around about what he'll get. As someone who would like to see Meyers in New England for the long haul, I've outlined a contract that seems both fair to Jakobi and cap friendly in both the short and long term.
The deal I would propose is as follows:
5 years with a $10 million signing bonus
Year Base Per Game Roster Bonus
1 $5 million $2 million
2 $5 million $3 million
3 $8 million $3 million
4 $8 million $4 million
5 $10 million $4 million
Each year's base salary becoming guaranteed in March.
In my opinion, something along these lines is fair and doesn't leave the Patriots in a lurch if things don't work out. By having a $10 million signing bonus, Jakobi can get a pretty good payday initially without carrying a huge dead cap. The base salary for each season is in line with other Patriots' contracts and could get rolled into future bonuses to save cap space. The rather hefty per game roster bonuses are designed to give the Patriots some breathing room with the cap in any season where Meyers isn't available.
