WHAT IF THE BRUINS COULD PICK THEIR OPPONENT?

With a busy weekend and some warm spring weather, blogging didn't make its way into my plans the past few days.  Of course, how many times can one write about the Red Sox leaving runners on base and expect people to actually want to read it?  Saturday the Bruins did do something exciting by getting another 2 points and winning the Presidents Trophy.  While the Presidents Trophy is not the goal of the season, it does give the Bruins home ice throughout the playoffs.
If you haven't heard by now, the Bruins will be facing the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the playoffs.  While teams don't talk about which teams they want to face in the playoffs, that is a topic that fans love to discuss.  Well, I'm a fan and you're a fan, so here are my thoughts on the topic.  If you have some cool ideas please share them in the comments section or using twitter.
If I were to pick a team I wanted the Bruins to face in round one it wouldn't be the Red Wings.  As a matter of fact I would put them on the bottom half of the bracket so we wouldn't need to face them until the Eastern Conference Finals.  The other team I would put in the bottom half of the bracket is the Montreal Canadiens.

While you may not agree with my opinion of not wanting to face either of these teams if we don't have to, you have probably put some thought into which teams you want to face.  Because I like to think outside the box and often wonder "what if...", I had an idea for what could make playoff systems more intriguing.  What if the team with the best seed got to pick their opponent?  I think that would put a cool twist on tournaments and could really reward teams for their regular season records.  In the case of the NHL playoffs, the Bruins would get to pick their opponent from the other 7 teams in the East.  Assuming the Bruins didn't select the Penguins, they would get the next pick.  After the first round is completed, the top team would get to pick its opponent for round two.

This style of pick your opponent tournament could be really entertaining in all levels of competitive sports.  Of course this system would put extra pressure on coaching staffs to pick a team they can beat.  I'm sure there would also be some built in motivation for teams being selected to knock off their selector.
