Not receiving the franchise tag last week, it looks like the all-time leading point scorer in Patriots history is set to be a free agent. While that is true, I’m not too worried about next year’s kicking situation.
The main reason I’m not too concerned is that I think Gostkowski will be back with the team. In his two previous contract years the contract negotiations looked like this.
2010- Didn’t sign until April 7th. His original deal was for 1 year at $1.759 million. That deal was short-lived as on August 25th it was changed to 5 years for a total of $15.795 million. While Ghost got $5.1 million in pocket for 2010, his cap hit was just $1.9 million.
2015- After being franchise tagged to the tune of $4.59 million in March, Gostkowski signed a 4 year deal in mid-July. This new deal earned him $8.1 million in pocket for 2015 and lowered the Patriots cap hit to $3.6 million. The 4 year deal totaled $17.2 million.

Looking at both of those situations, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something similar happen this year. Gostkowski will probably take a little time seeing what other teams are willing to pay. Belichick will sign him to a simple one year deal in the spring. They will then renegotiate to a long term deal once they know what the team money situation is for the upcoming seasons.
