Training camp is just a few sleeps away and the Patriots have yet to sign first round pick Sony Michel. While he was free to do all of the rookie and optional activities without a deal in place, it’s now time to sign and play. Although Michel did not seem to be concerned with it this summer, I’m starting to be very intrigued about what his deal will look like.
As of now, 22 of the first 32 players are under contract. Of the 10 unsigned players, 7 of them were taken in the top 10. Since the Patriots have already signed their top pick Isaiah Wynn, I’m curious as to what Michel’s contract is going to consist of.
Based upon the contracts for picks 29 and 32, Michel should likely be looking at a deal just under $10 million with a little over half of that being a signing bonus. While the details may not matter to everyone, I have a feeling they matter to him.

- Being a first round pick, his contract is for 4 years. The current CBA expires in 3 years.
- While first round running backs have longer shelf lives than other running backs, the average NFL career for an RB is 2.5 years.
- Running backs in New England frequently have more receptions than many wide receivers, unfortunately come negotiation time, you are are what you are (of course this may change under the new CBA).
Looking at some of the moves Sony has made including his pre-draft deal with Adidas, I think he might be similar to Gronk with how he makes financial decisions. Based on the lyrics to his song “Proud of Me”, I think his parents have taught him to stay away from people who are snakes.
