While these were thoughts I've had for many years (if only I could locate and link to some very old arguments from the ESPN message boards), I'll give some well deserved credit to Your Team Cheats for their awesome job on showing what a sham Spygate was.
With Spygate being talked about once again, I feel the need to point out two facts that very rarely get pointed out. No, this is not a rehash of the fact that it was just a location issue.
IN-GAME USE- The rule as written clearly stated that the recording during games was not an issue, but the use of the recording during the game was the issue. The Patriots used these recordings in preparing for the next time they were to face their opponent.
MEMO FROM YEAR BEFORE- The year before Spygate went down, a memo clarifying how the rules in regards to camera placement were to be interpreted was sent out. In the offseason the rule as written in the NFL Operations Manual was not changed to include this new interpretation. As far as I'm concerned this decision to not officially change the rule, negates the old memo.
