I believe this is the second year that the NFL has allowed "legal tampering". For those who don't know what it is, it is pretty much a 3 day window when teams can let players who are about to become few agents know that they are interested.
Personally, I am a big fan of this new legal tampering time period. Here is why:
It allows players to get a feel for what they will get on the open market.
Players aren't forced into making a quick decision thinking if they don't sign an offer right away then the team will spend money elsewhere leaving them hung out to dry.
Teams have an opportunity to match offers their free agents are likely to receive without being under the gun.
Teams can, although it may not technically be legal, inform players that they will not be picking up their options and let them be ready to "test the waters" while still having time to get a deal done.
