So, why would someone who thinks this whole pandemic is mostly BS opt-out if not for fear of getting sick or getting a family member sick?
Really, if you were pretty much financially set and close to the end of your career, wouldn't you opt out? Take Hightower for example. He just had a new baby and has played his entire career with the Patriots. Why chance getting traded, hurt, or cut this season? Instead he's getting the rare chance to be with his newborn and get a year of letting the body heal. He's also now under contract for the 2021 season.
Patrick Chung's situation is pretty similar, about to have a newborn and at the end of a solid NFL career. Sure, his contract extension was taking him through the 2023 season, but he could definitely benefit from a year off.
Everyone knows the running back room was overflowing this year. Brandon Bolden was in the last year of his deal. Why not take a year off and see where the chips fall next year? Why spend the dog days of summer worried about picking up and moving because you got traded? Take the season off and then get ready to remind Belichick why he loves you next offseason.
