THE TIME IS NOW FOR THE PATRIOTS AND AQIB TALIB

Julian Edelman dives for the end zone against the Broncos.
In 24 hours the NFL free agency period officially begins.  Once 4pm rolls around tomorrow we should have a better idea of whether or not Julian Edelman and Aqib Talib have played their last games as Patriots.  Today the Patriots made some small moves when they resigned TE Michael Hoomanawanui to a 2 year deal and released WR T.J. Moe
While the Patriots have multiple players about to enter free agency, the most talked about names are Edelman and Talib.

While I was originally pretty confident in the Patriots resigning Talib, the closer we get to 4pm tomorrow, the less confident I am.  Going into the tampering period I thought we would get something worked out once his agent could see what was out there.  I also thought that the Jets' releasing of Antonio Cromartie might make Talib and his camp hurry up and get a deal done.  Now I'm starting to think that Talib and several other cornerbacks are going to test the waters all the way to the deep end.  While it may work out for all of them, it could also back fire.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.  The rumors of the Washington Redskins possibly being back in play for Talib also makes me unsure or what's about to happen.  Based on comments made to Adam Schein on Mad Dog Radio and repeated throughout the twittersphere today, Alterraun Verner is expecting his free agency experience to be brief.  It appears he wants to play for a winner and is willing to sacrifice money for wins.
When it comes to Julian Edelman and the possibility of him coming back, I'm a little more optimistic.  While I think he wants his payday, I think he'll be back with the Patriots unless another team completely overpays for him.  I'm assuming of course that the Patriots do not try to completely low-ball him.  Obviously if someone is willing to overpay him, you can't blame him for leaving.  I'm still hoping the Patriots can find a team who is willing to trade for Danny Amendola so we can get rid of his contract and use the money on Edelman.

Since it appears that many people have forgotten, I'm going to remind everyone that we are still on the hook for $7.5 million of cap space for Aaron Hernandez.

I'll be interested to see what the Jets do with all the cap space they are creating as they
have made two significant cuts in the past two days (Cromartie and Santonio Holmes).  With those cuts, they move into the top ten for amount of money below the cap.  Of course they are still over $40 million away from the the Raiders who have over $66 million left in cap space.
