A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS' FIRST POSSESSION STRUGGLES

If you've watched the Patriots this season and felt that they were really struggling with their first possession of the game you are right.  In all four games this season the Patriots have started the game with a 3 and out.
When it comes to opening drives of the second half, they have done slightly better with only two three and outs.  Of course when you consider the third play from scrimmage in Miami resulted in a fumble, I don't think we can really consider that much of a positive.

Looking at the graphic you can see that the Patriots currently have 13 three and outs this season which puts them on pace for 52 in the regular season.  While three and outs are annoying for an offense, the until which probably suffers the most from them are the defense.  In addition to cutting into any rest time the defensive players may need, they also cut into the adjustment time which may be needed by the defensive coordinator.  Additionally, they give momentum to the opponents and energy to opposing fans.

While execution has a lot to do with these bad starts to the half, I think a good amount of the problem lies in the preparation by the coaches.
