Throughout this season, there has been talk of the Celtics possibly bringing Rondo back for the purpose of "showcasing" him in order to make a trade. With him now being named the captain, I imagine he's not on the trade block. Ainge's recent moves look like he is going to use the draft or maybe some draft picks to build a team around Rondo. With Rondo due to become a free agent at the end of next season, I wouldn't be surprised to see an extension once he gets back to game shape. Maybe it will even be announced in a cryptic tweet from #9 himself.
In his return to the hard court on Friday, Rajon Rondo was announced as the newest captain of the Boston Celtics. Focused on the task at hand, Rondo didn't even realize what had happened until his teammates were congratulating him on the honor. Earlier in the season Coach Brad Stevens stated that he would not be naming a captain. After seeing Rondo's leadership exhibited during his rehab, Stevens had a change of heart and felt that Rondo earned it. Although Stevens says that Rondo had no idea, I imagine Danny Ainge gave the new head coach the go ahead.
