If you feel like the Patriots are always on defense this season, you may be onto something. Here is a statistical look at the 34 times the Patriots have had the ball this season.
First off, those 34 times the Patriots have had the ball should really just be 33 times because of the muffed punt return during week one. So, of the 33 times the Patriots have had the ball:

- 5 have resulted in field goal (15.2%)
- 36% of drives resulted in either points or a missed field goal
- the Patriots have scored on 63% of the drives which went for longer than 4 plays
In total the Patriots have had 22 possessions lasting less than 2 minutes. That is 67% of all of their possessions for the season. Not really the ideal situation for a new defensive coordinator who keep losing veterans.
As has been the case in previous years, the Patriots offense is clearly struggling with getting a first down. Once again I feel this issue has a lot to do with the play calling of Josh McDaniels. Although the Patriots defense has by no means been spectacular, when the offense is consistently giving the ball back after less than 2 minutes of play, it’s pretty hard to catch your breath and make adjustments.
