Well, it's finally here, Patriots' football. Like most New Englanders I've got some plans to watch football this evening and have my DVR set to record all of the action. With this being the first preseason game of the season and Tom Brady set to sit out the first month of the regular season (games, practices, meetings, speaking and playing catch with his boys), here is what I'll be looking for tonight.
Special Teams- As usual Ryan Allen looked great this summer in practice. As someone who has been one of the best punters in the NFL since he came into the league, this may be the year when he becomes hands down "the best". Obviously, his job always looks better if he gets some good blocking so he can focus on kicking the ball where and how he wants. The end result is also heavily dependent on how good of a job his teammates can get down field to force a fair catch or down it without letting it go into the endzone.
Offensive Line- Yes, Dante is back and I'm expecting a much improved line. Will this be evident this early in the season? Probably not. Nevertheless, I will be paying more attention to them than I typically would in the preseason.
Quarterbacks- Yes, it will be Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett time tonight unless Belichick surprises us all with a Tom Brady Cameo. Being the first preseason game and the fact that the usual targets will not be in the lineup, it will be a little hard to effectively judge the jobs they do unless they are throwing to someone who is wide open. Regardless, it is still something to keep an eye on.
Defense- I'll be missing my Chandler Jones tonight. With several rookie cornerbacks trying to make the team in some capacity, I'll be taking some notes on how many snaps they are getting and any special teams they play on
