This has probably been the least eventful offseason for the Red Sox. The two biggest additions to the team are catcher A.J. Pierzynski and centerfielder Grady Sizemore. Both players were free agents who signed one-year deals. The biggest loss to the lineup was centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury who ended up signing with the Yankees.
I like both signings for a similar reasons. For starters, both guys were given one-year deals, so if things don't work out we aren't stuck with them or their contracts. AJ's contract is for $8.25 million while Grady's is for $750,000 guaranteed and can max out at $6 million based on incentives.
Pierzynski brings AL experience and a career .283 average. Although he is 37, he still has a lot left in his tank and is coming off a 70 rbi season.
Sizemore will bring some versatility and insurance to our outfield if he can stay healthy. Grady hasn't played since the 2011 season when he played 71 games and had 268 at bats. While he only hit .224 that season, more than half of his 60 hits were extra base hits.
While I would have been happy to have seen Ellsbury back in a Red Sox uniform, I was glad that we didn't go out and give some crazy money to a different player trying to replace him. I think Jackie Bradley is our centerfielder of the future and should get the chance to get more experience at the major league level.
Although many of the players are already down in Florida getting ready for the season, pitchers and catchers officially report on the 15th while the rest of the team reports on the 18th.
