One position the Patriots currently have a need for is center. While Hughlett played center in high school, at 6'4" 251 pounds he would be one of the smaller centers in the NFL. Hughlett and Aiken both have experience at the tight end position to go along with their prototypical tight end frames. Aiken has been an emergency tight end on the Patriots' roster. Other positions played by Aiken during his glory years are defensive end, punter and quarterback.
After making some pretty bold moves to bolster their defense and offense, the Patriots made a curious acquisition when they signed long snapper Charley Hughlett to a 2 year deal. What makes this curious is that the Patriots resigned long snapper Danny Aiken to an extra year before the free agency period even started. So, do we have a competition at long snapper where the best man has a job in the fall? Or is this a situation where the Patriots are looking to save some money off the cap? Those are the two theories that are out there already. I have another possibility. While both players have been long snappers in both the NFL and college, they were both versatile in their high school days. While that was a long time ago and against inferior competition, we all know how Bill Belichick likes his "football players".
