IS THE PATRIOTS’ OFFENSE LAYING AN EGG AFTER TURNOVERS?

There’s nothing like a quick 6 points right after your opponent gifts you with a turnover. There was a time when a free possession for Brady meant +7 almost immediately. That time is not 2019.
After last night’s disaster I decided to see if it was just my imagination telling me that the Patriots’ offense is laying an egg after turnovers. I went through the play by play for each game this season to see what the offense has done following opponent giveaways which the defense didn’t convert to points. This is what I found.

The Patriots have recovered the ball 6 times within their quarter of the field (Patriots 0-25). They have punted on 5 of those possessions and missed 1 field goal.

When taking back the ball between their 25 and 50 yard lines, they’ve punted twice and let the game wind down once. So 9 takeaways on their side of the field has yielded the offense a goose egg.
Now let’s go to the other side of field. Surely with a short field they’ll be a lot of points.

When getting a freebie between the opponents’ 25 and midfield the Patriots have scored 2 touchdowns and two field goals. They’ve also had one interception and one punt.

New England has had 8 possessions start between the endzone and their opponents’ 25. With this pristine field position they’ve scored 7 times, 3 touchdowns and 4 field goals. They’ve also had a turnover of their own.

Although inside the 25 isn’t exactly inside the red zone, a .375 success rate isn’t much of a momentum boost. As of right now there are only 4 NFL teams who have a red zone scoring percentage below that.
