I'm sure you've heard them on the radio. You know, the callers and radio personalities who think bringing back Josh McDaniels is what the Patriots need to get the offense and Mac Jones back on track. In their minds it's all Matt Patricia and Joe Judge's faults. Are they right?
Did the Patriots lose that much when Josh McDaniels left for his current head coaching gig in Vegas? While I'm going to say yes, it isn't as simple as some would like to believe.
When Josh went to the Raiders he took with him a cast of Patriots' coaches from the offensive side of the ball. This in my opinion is why the offense is really hurting. So, who did he take and what were they in charge of.

Carmen Bricillo was the Patriots offensive line coach last season. Originally he was co-offensive line coach with Cole Popovich. Unfortunately right before the 2021 season started the NFL mandated that coaches get the Covid vaccine in order to be in direct contact with players. Popovich declined leaving Bricillo as the offensive line coach. Bricillo was assisted by Billy Yates.
Mick Lombardi was the Patriots receivers coach and many believed to be in the running for the offensive coordinators job in New England. Well, he became the offensive coordinator for the Raiders. Previous to coaching the receivers, Mick was an assistant quarterbacks coach.
Bo Hardegree served as the quality control/quarterbacks coach last year in New England. He is now the quarterbacks coach in Vegas. If you read hisbio you'll see that he is a former quarterback who is credited with the improved play of Sam Darnold his second year in the league.
In my opinion, losing that group of coaches is a big reason why the Patriots are struggling. If we had a parallel universe where Josh didn't take these guys with him, the offense would look a lot better

Although he didn't jump ship to join Josh in the AFC West, Ivan Fears was also a huge loss to the offensive side of the ball. Fears retired after the 2021 season. His most recent tenure with the Patriots preceded Belichick's as he rejoined New England in 1999 as the receivers coach before becoming the running backs coach in 2002. If you don't think his retirement had a ripple effect to all aspects of the offense, you'd be mistaken.
