HOW SALE’S RECORD IS NOT A GOOD REFLECTION OF HIS NUMBERS

Chris Sale has made 14 starts this season.  While he is 2-7, the Red Sox are 4-10 during those starts.  Here's a look at how that compares to the rest of the MLB.
BATTING AVERAGE-  Of the qualified pitchers, Sale ranks 8th with an average of .198.  The 7 players above him are a combined 54-11.
  1. Verlander 9-2
  2. Castillo 6-1
  3. Giolito- 10-1
  4. Morton 8-0
  5. Orodizzi 9-2
  6. Soroka 7-1
  7. Teheran 5-4
STRIKEOUTS-  Sale will be making his 15 start this afternoon.  There are currently only 3 pitchers who have more strikeouts than him.  All 3 of of those players have already made their 15th start.  With 14 starts under his belt, Sale has 120 strikeouts.  Their record is a combined 20-12)
  1. Cole 140 K (6-5)
  2. Scherzer 136 (5-5)
  3. Verlander 125 (9-2)
While the strikeouts don't seem to be benefitting Sale or team as much as they'd like,at least they are benefiting the Greater Boston Food Bank.
WHIP-  With all of the strikeouts Sale is throwing, he's still managing to be in the top ten in another category.  Sale's averaging less than 1 baserunner per inning with his cool WHIP of 0.96.  The 5 players above him in this category are a combined 43-8, with nobody else having more than 2 losses.
  1. Verlander .73 (9-2)
  2. Ryu .80 (9-1)
  3. Greinke .88 (8-2)
  4. Chirinos .93 (7-2)
  5. Giolito .95 (10-1)

ERA- Chris Sale's average is now sitting at 3.52.  While not in the top 10, it's much better than it was at the beginning of the season.  After having his first start of the season last only 3 innings with 7 earned runs, for an ERA of 21, Sale has been inching closer towards his career ERA of 2.92.
RUN SUPPORT AVERAGE PER START-  Regardless of how well Sale is pitching, this is one stat which he very rarely gets to contribute to.  Since he hasn't had any at bats in 2019, he truly has been the victim of quiet bats.  Leading the way for the MLB and the Red Sox in getting 7.43 runs of support per start is Eduardo Rodrigues.  Just out of the top ten is teammate Rick Porcello with 6.00 runs of support.  Of the 86 qualifiers, Sale is ranked #80 with his measly 3.29 runs of support.

Doing a little "what if" scenario and assuming Sale could just get the same # of runs as the 41st qualifier (4.91), here are the new and improved records.  Instead of being 4-10 in his starts, the Red Sox would be 8-6.  Sale's personal record would go from 2-7 to 8-2.  It is worth noting that there were many instances in which assuming 5 runs of support would have given an even better team or personal outcome, I however stuck with 4.91 as my number.

RUN SUPPORT PREVIOUS YEARS WITH THE RED SOX-  In my head I was thinking that Sale hasn't had a whole lot of run support as a member of the Red Sox.  While that may be true in some games, over the course of the year he's had some pretty good support.

2018- 4.96
2017- 5.53
2016- 4.56
