Last week everybody and their brother wrote about how Tom Brady didn't attend OTAs. As usual they were all writing the same thing as each other and trying to create a fire by using copious amounts of liquid smoke. Since I like to post original thoughts, I didn't go near that topic. Instead I'll just remind everyone that the "O" in OTA stands for optional and give you some data on why Brady should be avoiding April OTAs.
We all know Tom wants to play forever and Gisele wishes he was already retired. Spending some quality time together with their children and promoting Best Buddies in Qatar is much better for Tom the husband than working out with Brian Hoyer. Assuming Brady would like another Super Bowl Championship or two, it's probably best he get in some family time with the supermodel wife.
Here's a look at some numbers for why Tom Brady the football player shouldn't be taking any grief for skipping April OTAs.
- 37- The number of post-season games Brady has played in. So about 2 1/2 seasons of highly competitive football.
- 2009-2010 was the last year Brady only played an extra week of football. That year they lost wild card weekend to the Ravens. The prior offseason Brady was recuperating from his knee surgery. The year before that, the usual extra month of NFL playoffs as the Patriots were in the Super Bowl again.
- In the last four seasons Brady has played an extra month three times.
- Over the past four seasons Brady has played 11 extra games. That translates into 18 extra weeks of football when you throw in the non-game weeks.
- An NFL season is 17 weeks.......Brady deserves to skip OTAs without getting any grief from anyone.
