When Darrelle Revis was a member of the Jets he referred to Bill Belichick as a jerk. Two years later he has happily signed a contract with the New England Patriots to play for the jerk. How does that happen?
Many people have looked at this deal and the recent trades the Patriots have made with Tampa Bay and come to the conclusion that the Buccaneers are just serving as a farm team for the Patriots. Had the Revis acquisition been the result of a trade, that would be pretty hard to refute. However, seeing that Revis is coming to New England as a free agent, it doesn't hold any water.
So what else could be going on? I think the Tampa Bay to New England connection has a lot to do with August practices. The past two preseasons the Pats and Bucs have participated in joint practices leading up to their preseason matchup. During those practices both teams get a chance to evaluate the other team's players. The players also get the chance to evaluate the opposing team's coaches. I think this is the real reason the Buccaneers have been a "gravy train" to the Patriots the past two seasons.
