Scoring the lone touchdown was RB Shane Vereen. Although it technically goes down as a 40 yard touchdown pass for number twelve, Vereen really took it down the field.
Special teams and defense stood out in a good way for the Patriots tonight. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski made both of his field goal attempts of the half. His 60 yarder with room to spare at the end of the half was rather impressive. Was there really any doubt? On the defensive side of the ball Chandler Jones finished the half being credited with 6 tackles and 2 sacks. As a whole, the defensive unit looked great and held a Cam Newton led Carolina offense to a mere 94 total yards. Offensively, the Patriots looked pretty good and spread the ball around with 5 different players receiving passes from either Tom Brady or Ryan Mallett. Yes, Mallett did play in the first half. As a matter of fact he went in for the Patriots' third offensive series. While Belichick claims that he brought in Mallett at that point in time because you never really know when a backup quarterback is going to enter a game, I still think it is just an attempt of trying to showcase him before the rosters get much smaller.
