Since Bruins' defenseman Dennis Seidenberg tore his ACL in December, fans have been wanting them to make a move. If they make a move it is likely to be just a stop-gap measure to finish out the season.
If the Bruins do decide to get a rental, it will be a guy who is due to be a free agent at the end of the season and is not playing for a contender. The player I would like to see put on a Bruins' uniform to finish out this season is 36 year-old Marek Zidlicky. Zidlicky is currently on a one year contract for the New Jersey Devils. The Czech has 8 goals and 20 assists this season and will be representing his country in Sochi next month.
Marek has playoff experience and was the key acquisition that propelled the Devils' to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2012. Unfortunately, although the Devils are currently in 6th place in the Metro Division, there is little separation between positions 2-8. If the Bruins are going to get a chance to rent Zid the Devils are going to have to start losing in regulation as they have 11 OT losses.
The three teams who appear to be out of contention as of today are Buffalo, Calgary, and Edmonton. If the Bruins do decide to get a rental sooner rather than later, they may need to look at some of their future free agents. Henrick Tallinder, Chris Butler, and Nick Schultz will all be free agents at the end of the season and will likely get moved to contenders in the market for a defenseman.
