COOL PATRIOTS' STATISTICS AFTER WEEK 15

12/19/2016

After holding the Broncos to just a field goal last night, the Patriots are now back to being the top defense when it comes to points allowed. With 14 games under their belts here are some really cool stats for the season:
  • Currently the Patriots are leading all teams with 16.6 points allowed per game. If we were to take out three of the touchdowns that were scored when the offense gave the opponents a ridiculously short field, that drops down the points per game to 15.1.
  • If we look at points given up per quarter we can see the the defense does its best work at the beginning of each half. The Patriots are ranked first in the first quarter with only allowing 2.3 points. In the second quarter they are ranked third allowing just 5 points. Third quarter they drop back to 3.9 points per game which is only good for 12th of all NFL teams. Finally, in the last quarter they are giving up 5.5 points per game. If you think back to the beginning of the season there were many times where the Patriots were up by a significant lead and they pretty much just played ole defense and allowed the other team to go down the field and score at the end of the game.
  • If we look at the points scored by the Patriots in each quarter, the breakdown goes like this: first quarter 7.6 points (2nd in NFL), second quarter 6.4 points (17th), third quarter 6.6 points (5th), and fourth quarter 5.6 points (24th).
  • The Patriots lead all NFL teams with three safeties on the season. They also lead the NFL with fewest interceptions thrown with a total of two. So the Patriots have one more safety than they do interceptions. Wow!
  • One of the sexiest plays on special teams is blocking the other teams field goal. While we all remember last week's blocked field goal, you may not realize that the Patriots have blocked 7.41% of field goals attempted against them this season. This is good enough for third in the NFL.
  • Last but not least the Patriots have only had 34 passes deflected all season while the defensive unit has deflected 62.
