BITS AND PIECES ABOUT BOSTON SPORTS TODAY

Well, today is a pretty quiet day in the world of sports in New England.  The Red Sox have the day off from baseball after losing their opener against the Orioles.  Although they didn't have a game today, the team did have a celebratory day at the White House in honor of winning the World Series last year.  Gomes wore his patriotic blazer, Ortiz took a group selfie with Obama, and that about sums it up.
Tomorrow night the Sox are back to baseball with John Lackey facing off against Ubaldo Jimenez.  The last time Lackey pitched against the Orioles he brought his "A-game".  Lackey went the full 9 innings while only giving up 2 hits.  Lackey had a no-no heading into the 7th inning.  The first hit he gave up would be a homerun to Adam Jones.  This was Jones' 3rd career homerun off of Lackey.

Since this will be Jimenez's first year in the AL East, the Red Sox have not seen a lot of him.  Dustin Pedroia has had 10 plate appearances and 5 hits against him.  Although it is a small sample size, the Red Sox have a .443 OBP.
The Bruins have tonight off and will play back to back road games in Detroit and Toronto respectfully.  The Bruins have played one more game than the St. Louis Blues and are three points ahead of them in the standings.  With the way the local teams have taken down the St. Louis teams in championship games, I'm hoping for a Bruins vs. Blues matchup in the Stanley Cup.

On Monday Patrice Bergeron was named the NHL Second Star of the Week.  Today Jarome Iginla was named the NHL First Star of the Month.  While the only accolade which really matters is being a Stanley Cup Champion, those awards are well deserved.  Both players are showing up game in and game out ready to do whatever it takes to win.  While there have been very few mental or physical errors by any Bruins' players lately, I can't recall any with either of these guys.

The Celtics have 8 games left to this lost season.  I hope out turnaround happens this summer so we can have a deep playoff run next year.  Personally, I would like to see Rondo stick around Boston.  Maybe with a good pick and a free agent pick up this summer he'll decide to stick around.

A Celtics fun fact for you:  On this day in 1987, Larry Bird had a first half triple double.

Today the Patriots brought Will Smith in to Foxboro to see if he could help the team.  No, the rapper/actor is not trying to make it in the NFL.  This Will Smith is a linebacker who has played all of his career for the New Orleans Saints.  Smith did not play last season as he tore his ACL in late August.  As a rookie, Will had 40 tackles and forced 6 fumbles.  His career high for sacks came in 2009 when he had 13 of them.
