Whether you spend your Sundays watching NFL games or just catch a glimpse of the plays of the week, you've certainly seen some ridiculous catches in recent years.  If you saw Seattle's Paul Richardson's touchdown reception on Saturday, you know exactly what I'm getting at.  These gloves are completely out of control.

Although we are all fully aware that there are very strict rules on what the air pressure of a ball is at the onset of a game, many fans don't really know what the rules consist of when it comes to gloves. Having read the NFL rules on gloves multiple times, I'll give you a summary:
  • The color of the gloves is probably the most important rule and I believe the only one which is actually enforced by the NFL. Teams must submit the glove colors for their offensive lineman to the league in the offseason. Other players can wear gloves which are black, white, or a team color. Bi-color and tri-color combinations of black, white and team color are also permitted.(Yes, I'm with you on how in the world could the officials miss all those calls against the Seahawks with those bright green gloves?)
  • Gloves can be as sticky as possible as long as they don't leave behind residue on the ball. (I don't recall ever seeing this checked)
  • Gloves can not have adhesive substances added to them.

With those being the only rules regarding gloves, no wonder there appears to be some "special" gloves out there.  Wouldn't it make sense for a company like Nike to hook up one of their boys with some extra special gloves?  Search the internet for tacky NFL gloves and you'll hear about how sticky these gloves can get if you just add a little bit of heat.  Thinking about some toys I played with as a kid (okay, it was a bit more recent than that), remember how tacky those rubber octopuses would be when they were fresh out of the wrapper?  Picture a talented receiver switching out his gloves on every possession.  Heck, with all the money being spent on R & D these days would you be shocked if receivers had different sets of gloves to wear during different temperatures?
So, how do we get these crazy gloves out of the NFL?  It's simple really.  Give a few of the Patriots players some Odell Beckham specials and let the mob of Patriot haters do their thing.
